Additional Information

Bodelwyddan Castle, nestled between the Clwydian Hills and the rugged Welsh Coastline, is situated within 260 acres of parkland consisting of beautiful gardens and rambling woodland.

The Castle as seen today is the creation of architects Joseph Aloysius Hansom and Edward Welch, employed by the then owner Sir John Hay Williams and dates between 1830 and 1852.

Bodelwyddan Castle has a long and varied history. During the First World War, the estate and house were rented to the British Army for use as a recuperation hospital and officers mess. The grounds to the east of the main house were also used by nearby Kinmel Camp as an area for trench warfare training. The practice trenches can still be seen as you tour the grounds.
Bodelwyddan Castle remained in the ownership of the Williams family until the house and estate was sold in 1920, to a private girls school, Lowther College. An exhibition detailing this period of the castles history is included on the tour of the house.
A carefully planned programme of work has been followed in order to restore this historic property to its former Country House glory. Restored in the Victorian style, each room takes on a theme of its own and provides the perfect setting for collections of artwork and furniture on loan from organisations such as the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts, all from the Victorian period.

Bodelwyddan Castle prides itself on offering something for everyone, no matter their age, interest or abilities. Visitors to the grounds can enjoy the formal gardens, woodland trail, aviary, garden maze, adventure playground or try the orienteering course (pre-booking required). As well as the fine collections within the house, visitors can try interactive exhibits, indulge their inner child in the Victorian Toys and Games room and enjoy a variety of temporary exhibitions.
